We're excited to welcome Emilia to the Tennis Life coaching team. Having recently made the move from Finland to New Zealand, Emilia brings a fresh perspective, plenty of experience, and a coaching style that's all about helping players thrive in the realities of match play.

How would you describe your coaching style and the way you connect with your players?

I want players to understand the game, not just perfect technique. Technique is important, but tennis is full of uncomfortable, unpredictable moments, and that's what I prepare players for.

Building trust is a big part of my approach. Especially with adult players, showing up and trying something you're not good at can be uncomfortable enough. Early on, I often give fewer instructions than people expect so I can see what comes naturally and how people respond to challenges.

I know we've built a good connection when a player starts asking questions, disagrees with me occasionally, or wants to understand the "why" behind something. I'd much rather have a conversation than have someone nod along and do the opposite!

If you could have a theme song play every time you walk onto the court, what would it be?

Maneater by Nelly Furtado.

What is a highlight of your coaching journey so far?

Coaching a group of U18 girls in Helsinki is right up there.

I worked with many of them from a young age and had the chance to watch them grow as players and people. We talked about everything from tennis and competition to school, confidence, and finding where they fit in.

Creating an environment where they felt comfortable enough to fail, learn, and improve was incredibly rewarding.

And, of course, moving to the other side of the world to continue building my coaching career has been a pretty special chapter too.

What do you enjoy most about being part of Tennis Life?

Honestly, the people.

Everyone has been so welcoming since I arrived, and getting to work alongside such a supportive team every day has made a huge difference. Moving across the world comes with its ups and downs, so having that support around me means a lot.

When you're not on court, what's something you like to do in your spare time?

I still spend plenty of time playing and training myself.

I'm also studying medicine remotely, so between tennis, university, and the occasional heated yoga session, I keep pretty busy. Apparently sweating through multiple challenges at once builds character.

Who would be in your dream doubles/mixed doubles team (celebrity or pro)?

Rafael Nadal.

I've always been a Rafa fan. His mentality has been one of the biggest inspirations in my tennis journey. The way he competes for every point is something I try to bring to my own game and encourage in my players too.

If you could spend a week with a professional player and their team, who would it be and why?

Probably Coco Gauff or Paula Badosa.

I've followed both of their careers for years, so seeing what life actually looks like behind the results, the training, pressure, and day-to-day routines would be fascinating.

Be sure to say hello to Emilia if you see her on court. We're thrilled to have her as part of the Tennis Life team and can't wait for more players to benefit from her knowledge, energy, and unique perspective on the game. 🎾
