Earlier this year, the ASB Classic brought some of the world’s best tennis stars right here to Auckland — showing us what top-level tennis really looks like. Watching those players battle it out is a reminder: it’s not just talent, it’s how they train every day that makes the difference. And you can start training like them right now, no matter the season.
1. They show up with a plan
Top players don’t just walk on court and hit balls — they know exactly what they’re working on before they pick up a racquet.
Your move: Ask your coach what your focus is for the session and keep it front of mind the whole time.
2. They train at match intensity
When top players practice, they hit like they’re already in a match — every ball counts.
Your move: Treat every drill like it’s the final point of the final set.
3. They nail the ‘boring’ stuff
Footwork drills, shadow swings, injury-prevention exercises — top players never skip them.
Your move: Spend 10-15 minutes before training going through your physical exercises.
4. They review and adjust
After training or a match, top players ask: What did I do well? What do I need to fix?
Your move: Keep a simple notebook — jot down one thing you improved and one thing to work on after each session.
5. They look after their bodies
Recovery is part of training — eating well, sleeping enough, stretching, and staying hydrated.
Your move: Drink water before you’re thirsty and stretch while you’re still warm.
You don’t have to wait until you’re on TV to train like a top player. Start building these habits now, and you’ll give yourself the best chance to be the player you dream of becoming.
