Last month in our equipment series, we looked at how choosing the right tennis strings can influence power, control, comfort and durability. This month, we're turning our attention to the racquet itself.

Selecting a new racquet can be exciting, but with so many options available it's easy to feel overwhelmed.

The truth is that the right racquet can make a real difference to your enjoyment of the game. While technique is always the most important factor, choosing a racquet that suits your age, strength and playing style can help you play with greater confidence and consistency.

So, what should you look for?

⚖️ Weight

One of the biggest differences between racquets is weight.

Lighter racquets (260–285g)

  • Easier to swing

  • Generate racquet head speed more easily

  • Ideal for beginners, juniors moving into full-size racquets, and social players

Mid-weight racquets (285–305g)

  • Offer a balance of power, control and manoeuvrability

  • A great choice for many intermediate players

Heavier racquets (305g+)

  • Provide greater stability and control

  • Better suited to handling faster-paced shots

  • Favoured by advanced and competitive players

A simple rule of thumb: the heavier the racquet, the more stable it feels on contact.

⚖️ Balance Point

Weight tells only part of the story. Where that weight is distributed can also affect how a racquet performs.

Head Light

  • Easier to manoeuvre

  • Quicker through the air

  • Popular with advanced players and doubles specialists

Even Balance

  • A blend of power and manoeuvrability

  • Suits a wide range of playing styles

Head Heavy

  • Helps generate power

  • Useful for developing players looking for extra depth and stability

🎾 Junior Racquets

Junior racquets are designed to match a player's height, strength and stage of development.

Moving into a racquet that's too long or too heavy too early can make it harder to develop good technique. As players grow, racquet sizes typically progress from 17", 19", 21", 23", 25" and 26" before moving into a full-size adult frame.

If you're unsure which size is right, ask a Tennis Life coach for guidance.

🎯 String Patterns

The arrangement of strings also affects how a racquet performs.

16x19 (Open Pattern)

Easier access to spin

More power

Higher ball trajectory

18x20 (Dense Pattern)

Greater control

More precision

Flatter ball trajectory

For most club players, a 16x19 pattern offers a great combination of spin and forgiveness, while stronger and more advanced players may prefer the precision of an 18x20 setup.

💪 Power vs Control

Not all racquets are designed with the same goal in mind.

Some models feature thicker frames and stiffer construction to help generate easy power and a larger sweet spot.

Others are built for players who value precision and control, offering a more connected feel and greater shot placement.

Neither is better—it's about finding the balance that suits your game.

🎾 Did You Know?

Rafael Nadal's famous topspin forehand helped make the Babolat Pure Aero one of the most recognisable racquets in tennis. Today, fellow Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz continues that legacy, using a version of the Pure Aero family to combine explosive power, speed and spin.

While the racquet doesn't create the shot on its own, the right equipment can help players maximise their strengths and develop their playing style.

The Takeaway There is no such thing as the "best" racquet—only the best racquet for you.

Babolat's three flagship racquet families are designed around different player benefits:

Pure Drive – Power

  • Explosive power

  • Versatility for a wide range of players

  • Confidence-inspiring performance from anywhere on the court

Pure Aero – Spin

  • Maximum spin potential

  • Fast, aerodynamic design

  • Ideal for players who like to dictate play with heavy topspin

Pure Strike – Control

  • Precision and feel

  • Greater connection to the ball

  • Built for players who want to attack with confidence and accuracy

Whether you're buying your first racquet or upgrading your current one, understanding these key features can help you make a smarter choice and get more enjoyment from your tennis.
